Megan and Joe tied the knot this summer in an intimate ceremony at a family friends' home in the Adirondacks. Surrounded by love and breathtaking views, our catering and design teams absolutely loved being part of their wedding day. You can find their Real Wedding in the 2021 VOW Magazine issue, out now! We recently caught up with the couple to hear about their wedding day...

Why did you choose to get married at a family friend's home?

We were planning a much bigger wedding reception in Lake Placid, but we had to alter our plans due to the COVID pandemic. We are forever grateful to our family friends who allowed us to use their lakeside home and boat house for our special, intimate wedding reception. We both grew up spending lots of time on various lakes in the Adirondacks with our families so it was the perfect place to celebrate our special day.

How did you make your day unique / special / personal?

Having a reception with just our immediate family was not our initial plan but it ended up being more special than we could have ever imagined. We chose lots of small details throughout the day to keep things personal.

My cousin, Ben Crandall, is an extremely talented musician and we were honored to have him perform our first dance, mother/son, and father/daughter dances. He even changed around a few of the lyrics to make each song more personal.

Joe wore his grandfather's tie clip and I wore my grandmother's emerald ring. My mom wore it as her - Ëœsomething borrowed' in her wedding as well.

I love to bake. Back in the day, my friends even nicknamed me "Cooks". Since our wedding day was also Joe's birthday, I surprised him by making our wedding cake.

What was your most memorable moment?

During the end of our ceremony, the priest had our parents join us on the altar for a special blessing. As the procession was leaving the church, my mom unfortunately had her toe on my veil and ripped it right out off my head. If you squint in our photos, you can see her reaction as we genuinely laughed our way down the altar.

What was your favorite food or beverage item? How did you customize your wedding?

How could we pick? Everything was amazing from the seafood station and passed hors d'oeuvres to the coursed dinner. The entire Mazzone team made sure every bite was delicious. We all got to sit at one beautifully decorated farm table because of the size of our party. The team made it a wonderful experience by plating us all in sync and describing each course. The setting also made hearing our various toasts even more intimate. It was my dream dinner party come true.

If we did have to pick my favorite food item was the house made ricotta gnudi with sweet peas and wild mushrooms. As for a beverage item, I'm a sucker for a coup champagne glass, and the display we used was one of my favorite unique design elements. Joe's favorite food item was the seared scallops with asparagus, radish, and arugula mustard seed vinaigrette.

What was your favorite part about working with the Mazzone Team?

I feel extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to work with the Mazzone Team for my wedding. My family has quite a history with them. We run a foundation for families with Cystic Fibrosis and Mazzone has catered our yearly fundraiser for over 10 years. I felt completely at ease knowing I was in their capable hands. Their entire team is excellent, professional and their attention to detail is unmatched. On top of that every single bite of food was more delicious than the last.

What really makes the Mazzone Team special is Aimie Wockenfuss. Her creative talent is boundless. She has the ability to take someone's event vision and make it a reality. For someone, like myself, who wasn't able to perfectly articulate my vision, Aimie took my subtle cues and pictures, asked a few poignant questions, and created a setting even better than I could have imagined. From the string lights in the boat house, to the retro blue water glasses, I loved every detail. I can't thank her enough for her calming presence and anything is possible attitude.

What tip would you give other couples?

Try as best as you can to be flexible, especially in this time of COVID. Although our wedding plans changed completely, we were still able to have the very best day. Embracing the limitation placed on us by COVID and our concern for the safety of our family and friends allowed us to cherish the intimacy and uniqueness of our wedding!
